AWARENESS AND RECOGNITION OF ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES
AWARENESS AND RECOGNITION OF ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES
- Recognise your domestic appliances
- Safe use of domestic appliances
- Electrical consumption of electrical appliances
- Minimize the electric bill
- Aware about all specification of electric appliances
A domestic appliance is a device which assist in household
function like cooking , cleaning, food preservation. They varies in size from
small to big.
Small appliances are very useful and easy to carry. You can
carry it from one place to another without any hassle. You can find it mostly

Safe use of
domestic appliances
- Make sure switch is off before plugging the cord of appliance
- Unplug all electric appliances when they are not in use or if you are going to clean or repair. This is because a voltage surge could turn them on or cause a short circuit.
- Pull the plug, not the cord, to disconnect appliances.
- Be careful not to overload circuits with too many plug
- All domestic appliances comes with manufacturer’s instruction manual. Read all the precautions and procedure to start and stop the equipment.
- Don’t use extension cords with high wattage appliances like air conditioner or electric iron. For these heavy load appliances there is provision of separate circuit. Always plug into recommended separate circuit.
- Don’t operate electric appliances in or near water.
- Check the cable(cord) of appliances is in good condition i.e. it is not damaged. If cable is damaged then don’t use that appliance.

and corrective action to prevent someone life.
- Don’t touch them directly. If you touch them directly you also get socked.
- Shutoff the power supply, if possible. You can close home circuit breaker, turn off power to that part of house.
- Separate them from source if you are unable to switch off power. Use an insulator/ non-conductor (like a rope or a wooden broom handle to separate the person from the current.

Electrical consumption
of electrical appliances
Due to high rates of electricity, everyone should use home
appliances very carefully. So we should avoid the excess use of high power
appliances to save electric bill and to save energy of the nation. Power consumptions
are mentioned in watts or wattage of appliances. Wattage may vary from appliances
to appliances. A small refrigerator may consumes less power than bigger 2 door
refrigerator.
Wattage of appliances
Home appliance |
Wattage |
Kwh |
Bulb |
60 watt |
60*8hrs =0.48Kwh |
Tube light |
40 watt |
40*8hrs =0.32Kwh |
Ceiling fan |
60 watt |
60*15hrs = 0.9kwh |
LED tv |
60 watt |
60*4hrs = 0.24kwh |
fridge |
150 watt |
150*10hrs = 1.5kwh |
All values are estimates, you should check the appliance
labels to find out correct power consumption.
What is the
difference between running watt and starting watt??? Running or rated watts
are the continuous watts needed to keep items running. Starting watts needed
for 2-3 seconds to start motor-driven machine like refrigerator
What are the other scope for saving energy consumption
- Using natural resources as primary one like open window and doors – this may reduce fan and tube light usage and therefore unit consumption reduces.
- Use of LED bulbs instead of incandescent bulb.
- Unplug all unused items and switch off appliances whenever not needed. Like T.V , charger, fan, bathroom lights.
- Use star rated appliances
- Maintenance/ replacement of equipment which consumes more electricity.
- Dust your tube lights and lamps regularly. Dirty tube lights and bulbs reflects less light and can absorbs 50% of the light.
- Use ceiling fan or table fan against air conditioner. if you are using AC then set the air conditioner at 26 degree Celsius to reduce your electric cost. You can reduce air conditioning energy use by as much as 40% by shading your home’s window and walls.
- Always purchase energy efficient appliances to save electricity.
